0019 NOT WORKING IN WINDOWS 7

I have installed 0019 in my new Windows 7 laptop. It will not allow me to upload to my MEGA 1280 board. When I go to Tools then Serial Ports it is greyed out and not available. So effectively I can not change the USB assigned serial port that my board is connected to.

A quick check of hardware installed shows several USB ports but no references are made to a comm port (the program seems to default to COMM1). Evidently Windoze 7 does things differently than previous versions or the setting is hidden in some way.

Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

Dillon

Now, wait, were you using 0018 on Windows 7 before this, or did you just switch to Windows 7 and 0019 at the same time? Can't tell from your post.

I just tried 0019 on Windows 7 Pro and had no problems whatsoever...

Windows 7 here without problems.

I cant really chime in, I do have 7 on my main machine, but my arduino is hooked up to a serial port not usb, and it works fine

(grumble now I have to move this stuff back to the other room)

This is a new computer it never had 0018 on it before. And 0018 has the same problem. Turns out that it is a Windoze 7 problem (go figure) not a problem with 0018 or 0018. I suspect it is a problem with the way Win 7 displays (or actually does not display) USB/comm ports.

I have looked at some of the FTDI sites on the web and not found anything that helps. I was told by a friend that sometimes Win 7 does not display the settings and has to be turned on before it will. Unfortunately he cant remember what he did to display the settings.

Any ideas are better than what I have

I'm confused is "Windoze" some kind of Windows variant? Maybe you are using a hacked copy. (Or has this childish name just not warn off yet?)

Clearly this is a FTDI driver issue. Are you running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7?

If windows 7 has a device manager or similar, look there to see if there is a com port listed when the arduino is plugged into the computer.

it does, click the start menu and type "device manager" into the search box

Turns out that it is a Windoze 7 problem (go figure) not a problem with 0018 or 0018

I think is more a 'layer 8 problem' than a Windows problem.

...Have you installed any USB-serial drivers?

I'm confused is "Windoze" some kind of Windows variant?

Sorry guys.. the reference to Windoze just reflects my aversion to using Windows operating systems (unfortunately I have to for this effort)

I have resolved the problem. There were two actually .. first the device manager hides some devices so you have to unhide them. Second Windows 7 "DID NOT" install the correct FTDI drivers so I had to go to http://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htm.

This fixed the problem and I can not upload the sketches to the processor board.

Thanks to all of the people that commented and lent their moral support.

Glad you got it working!

We will assume you have a typo

19 was released? Was i missing some news? Cant find anything on it G

look here: http://www.arduino.cc/

about 1/3 way down the page under Arduino News (archive)

i am slightly underwhelmed by the size of the news.. then again, looking at the changes - its not a big update anyway, is it?

I can confirm this problem.

The reason being release 0019 does not include the correct driver for 64 bit version of 7. Next release should fix it!

What works for me is the same as posted by Dillon.

Cheers!
