what mosfet would you recomend for this purpose? a surface mount version and a "normal" through hole version
I am not very experienced choosing p-channel mosfets or surface mount components. I can tell you two things. For breadboard prototyping, thru-hole is a must, that's pretty obvious! Maybe you can find breakout adapters for surface mount components and do it that way. Second thing is that, if you are choosing thru-hole, mosfets generally come in to-92 and to-220 packages. For the current you need (64 x 20mA = 1.3A), you will not find to-92 packages, so they will have to be the larger to-220 package. These have max voltages of at least 20V and 16A, so will be much higher spec than you actually need.
