100 LED Array With Multiple Options

I have a project I want to get started on, but I kmow nothing of Arduino coding or the correct components to use.

The basic idea is to have an array of about 100 LEDs controlled by Arduino, where certain LEDs will light up when a knob is turned. So if the knob is in position 1, that tells the Arduino to light up these 10 (or however many) LEDs. The LEDs need to be located in a specific location correlating to the position of the knob. Not to just turn on a random set of n-LEDs.

Could someone point me in the right direction for reference articles, Blog posts, Arduino board comparisons (what each are capable of or useful for) or some other way of trying to figure out how to put all this together?

I've done some development in the past, not with Arduino, but other languages. So I have an idea of what to do but don't understand if this is even capable with Arduino.

Thank you in advance for any, and all, help.

The simplest way is to use a strip of WS2812 LEDs, sometimes called Neopixels.

You can cut up the strips to get a physical arrangement that you want.
