101 won't upload example file

I'm a new (struggling) user. I uploaded 1.6.11 on windows 10, targeted the Arduino 101 board on port 3. The basic blinking LED file compiles fine but while downloading the script I get the message...
Flashing is taking longer than expected. I follow the instruction to press MASTER_RESET to no avail and I eventually get a time out waiting for Arduino 101 on COM3. Any advice?

IDE 1.6.12 is very stable under win 10 here.
Might be worth the upgrade.

My 101 will not play at all with USB 3.0 ports but works fine on USB 2.0 or a USB 2.0 powered hub plugged into a USB 3.0 port.

Also are you up to date in boards manager ? Currently 1.0.7 for "Intel Curie Boards by Intel"

Hitting master reset can be a little tricky to time on occasion.
There is more information in the 101 section about some of the minor quirks of the 101.
