I have a 5V (2A max.) circuit for multiple Attiny84s and a 12V (4A max.) circuit for stepper motors. Does my negative wire have to have a 6A current rating now? Or will I be able to use less?

Surely you would need at least ten Attiny84s with all I/O pins driving 25 mA each, to draw 2 Amps.

Why would you be doing that?
