16 segment LED tutorial?

Hey, I just got a few 16 segment (2 digits 2 decimals) common anode led displays and I am looking into playing around with them. I have looked online and haven't found any tutorials though. Anyone have any good links? I have 74HC595 and TLC5940 current sinks. Thank You.

If I were you, I'd check out this thread:

You can edit the arrays that do the character to 7-segment encoding to instead encode for your "british flag" displays. You ought to be able to Google up a data sheet that has the encoding already figured out for you. Those displays were used for alpha as well as numeric character display back before dot matrix displays got cheap.

AS1107 chips are the easiest and cheapest way to control 7-segment displays. They can control up to 8 at once.

Except that these are not 7-segment displays.

They are 2 x 7-segments (which are always really 8).

Oops, right. Wrong display. :-[ Wrong thread too!
