Ooooook, it's the supply that the pullup is connected to that causes the series to be a voltage divider.
If I put the diodes back in their original config then I cannot activate Q1.
If I reverse D1 then I still have a voltage divider. If I then reverse D2 I can no longer activate Q4.
It's a pickle
