2560 bootloader fail, Unknown status 0x00

Hello: Trying to flash R3 bootloader to 2560, getting the following error... I'm using AVRISP mkII, i've tried the arduino AVRISP drivers, and other drivers. using Arduino IDE 1.0.0.

i have checked all my connections about 1000 times. i can't figure this out... Help!

What COM Port is your MkII on?

it is USB... i do not believe it has a com port... it is listed under "libUSB-Win32 Devices" in device manager right now...

i tried these drivers too: AVRISP mkII libusb drivers for Windows 7 / Vista x64 | MightyOhm

same issue, 0x00, rc=-1

I had the same problem, and it turned out to be my reset line. You cpuld try a 10kbigger resistor, and a 22pf cap on a breadboard. The mkii pulls the reset to gnd at the beginning, and if it can't you'll get the error

i put an o-scope on the reset line, and saw that it was not being brought down properly. traced it back to a faulty AND gate i was using (so multiple things can reset the chip). ran a hard wire, and flashed no problem.

I guess the thing tripping me up the most, was error code 0x00 is supposed to mean nothings wrong according to AVR069: AVRISP mkII Communication Protocol, but rc=-1 definitely meant something was screwy.

i've read in many places that rc=-1 almost always means a wiring issue, and this case was no different :slight_smile:

I wish ardunio had verbose output enabled by default on everything
