3.3v regulator onboard: how much power can handle

we all know that arduino use an voltage regulator to turn the 5v from usb (or higher from powersupply female plug) into the 3.3 pinout

I didn't. I thought it used the FDDI chip to do this.
About 50mA. (my experience is limited to the Duemilanova)
