If you use a 3-phase driver chip with dead-time generation there is no need for 6 signals, and in fact you
get hardware policed dead-time which feels a lot safer than trusting to software, and means the software
doesn't depend on the details of the drivers/IGBTs - better separation of concerns.
Designing hardware that is not going to self-destruct when the software fails is always a good thing!
