has anyone built a transmitter or receiver direct on pcb instead of buying a pre-built module? 433 would be great

No, since it transmits electromagnetic radiation and easily interfere with other things it is governed by the government. Depending on what you are doing you may need a license, a type approval, or several other things. There are exceptions for very low power devices.
Yes, receivers are wide open for the most part and you can design and build almost whatever you want.
