can i only use 5v on my BBB, or due to the TO-92 voltage regulator can i use 9v?
What is BBB ?
T0-92 is only the package name not the name of the regulator. Probably it is an 7805 ?

sorry BBB = Bare Bones Board Modern Device
The Datasheet says up to 20V are ok:
http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/SGSThomsonMicroelectronics/mXqxsyx.pdf
But the small TO-92 may not be able to handle much current. Try it for a short period of time (>10 sec) and feel if it gets warm. Do you know how much current your BBB needs ?
EDIT:
Here the manual for BBB says up to 12V are ok: http://www.moderndevice.com/Docs/BBB_RevC_schematic.pdf

For what it's worth, running a linear regulator (like the 7805) off of batteries is not a good idea, you're burning off almost half the power from your 9V battery as heat in the regulator.

But if i had only a 9v bat to hand, I could run my BBB?
and how would i attach it? :-/

Thanks Daniel :-*
The BBB normally comes with an ST L4931xxx50 regulator ( TO-92 packaging )
It is best to plug the 9V battery into the DC in jack
has a 9V to DC jack cable, however your BBB may not have a 2.1mm connector so check that carefully
You can order a 9V battery clip and solder the appropriate DC jack on the end of it - make sure you use the correct size
