A safer option could be "remote controlled power outlets".
They usually come in a 3-pack, with one remote control.
The (433 or 315Mhz) remote control can be replaced with an Arduino transmitter.

No offence is intended to all here but you do realize that when you make a statement like this you are saying dont trust them! There on the internet and cant be trusted.

As far as instructables go, i dont ever think that the people there are 100% right but i have seen some projects that have made me approach a project from another prospective.
There are other options out there so i guess YOU had best tell the gent what they are as he should no longer google.

I agree, looking and learning is incredibly valuable, and often “dumb” ideas can stimulate other directions in your own projects.
The danger in these instructables comes from the fact that many ‘Makerz’ have no idea what is safe or not.
It only takes one bad experience to terminate one inexperienced hobbyist.
Bad practices SHOULD be called out.
Whether they come from Manhattan, Beijing or Zimbabwe.

I'd rather go to a surgeon who learned the right way than by trial and error. I'd rather learn skydiving from a trained instructor than by the "hmmm, what happens if I pull this" school.
Hi All.
Many thanks for all your words of wisdom, i shall be diligent, as an ex engineer, safety has always been my #1 objective, since i was fifteen i have worked in manufacturing industries, on oil rigs, and in Power Stations, including Nuclear, and Chemical Plants, i am now 70 y.o. so after a lifetime in Engineering i must have done something right, it cannot be all luck, can it.?
