7 segment display with max 72xx

hi, i´m trying to get a display consisting of 5 digits (the first one has 2 segments (prints 1) and the following 4 have 7 segments and 3 of them have a point). (how can i attach a picture to this post? theres no browse button and if i click on insert image i only get: ) the display has 19 pins coming out. the first digit uses pins 1 and 10/11, the second uses pins 2-9 and 10, the third pins 12-19 and 10, the fourth pins 2-9 and 11, and the last one uses pins 13-19 and 11. (the points are pins 9,10/11 and pins 12,10) i tried to get it to work with the 7 segment example in the ledcontrol library and this code: http://www.ecs.umass.edu/ece/m5/tutorials/7221_led_driver_tutorial.html the main problem for me is that i kinda understand how to wire the pins (at least i think i do) but all i get is that all segments are lit all the time. which pins go to seg on the maxx and which go to dig? anyone have an idea on how to get started? hope my description is not too messed up. thanks.

if i click on insert image i only get: )

You paste the URL of the picture between these. Post it on flicker or some other site and get a URL for it.

thanks, i already uploaded it, here s the link :

Sorry all I got from that link was an advert, no picture.

Try using flicker, it's free and it works.

ok here it is. i still dont get it running, eventhough i wired everything the way it should be. at first i thought my max was trashed but it works perfectly with a 8x8 led matrix. so the problem must be somewhere else. i also tried it with a 4 digit 7 segment display like the guy in the link i posted used (12 pins). there i get permanent lit up 5555 and nothing changing at all, except for the brightness. it changes from very bright to the opposite without a certain pattern. sometimes it changes when i touch the wires, sometimes it doesnt, sometimes it changes without me touching it and when i reset the arduino it remains the state it was in instead of going out for a few seconds like it usually does after reset. i double checked the connections and everything is connected just fine.

hi. nobody have an idea? i tried the code i used for led matrix and i still just get all the segments lit up. its the same everytime, it should at least blink, but nothing. thanks

Hi, do you have link to the datasheet or is there some manufacturer data on the display to search for one.

The digits on the display must be common cathode segments. Some info on this is here:http://www.arduino.cc/playground/Main/MAX72XXHardware#Wiring7Segment The MAX72xx cannot be used with common-anode 7-segment displays. Eberhard

this is a common anode-type display. thank you very much, must have overread that.

Hi, the SAA1064 from Phillips that can drive common-anode 7-segment displays. But it can only drive 4 digits (so you would need 2 of them) and uses the IIC-bus (which is supported on the arduino by the Wire-library).

I've had good results using an STLED316S (6 digit 7-seg common anode display driver plus discrete LEDS and keyscan) in a recent user interface project.

.... none of this this new good stuff seems to available in DIP-package any more :'(

Ahh, but that's what breakout boards are for 8-) Sparkfun (and others) have adapter boards that would probably do the job for you.
