I've not seen that.
I have seen that some call the pins slightly different names but all the ones I've
seen use the same pinout.
Do you have some specific examples?

Even those have the same pinout as the ones in the through hole dip package. I think his problem is with the terminology (letters vs numbers) but until he specifies which devices he is comparing we really can't tell.
Of course the 'correct' datasheet would be the one that is provided by the manufacturer of the specific device that he is using.
