7805 Voltage Regulator

Hi,

I have a 7805 voltage regulator and when I power it up it gets pretty warm at 8 volts, and quite warm at 19 volts.
Should be this caused by a short, or is this the natural temperature that it should take?
I have a maximum of 100mA load.

Thank you,

19-5 = 14 times 0.1 = 1.4 watts of power dissipation. You need a heat sink attached!

Dropped voltage times current flow will allways generate heat in such a device

And All TO-220 linear devices must be heat-sinked. unless you are intending to use the thermal shutdown to "Blink" something which is possible but really crappy engineering. IMO

I get it. Because I lack a heat sink I've replaced it with a screw. And it works fine.

Thanks for the assistance.
