8*8 matrix display

Iam trying to display alphabets in an 8*8 dotmatrix display. Iam selecting rows using cd4017 and column datas are passing through arduino pins. My problem is that intensity is very low. Can any one tell me how to increase the intensity using software.Im using the arduino duemilanov.

You can use PWM which can help in some cases. set the brightness to about 75% and you'll get a better more even result than just high/low. You can also use a constant current driver instead of the +5 arduino out.

Put a delay between turning columns on and turning them off in preparation to switch to the next row. Since you have 8 rows you can afford to delay one millisecond between rows an still get over 100 refreshes per second.
