8x8 LED matrix row-anode column-cathode

I have 18 of the 8x8 LED matrices that are row-anode column-cathode part number 1088BS.

I bought them before the Chinese started selling the pcb with MAX7219 and 8x8 LED matrix all-in-one which makes it a lot simpler cascading the LED matrices.

Is there a ready-made PCB that I can buy and use with these type of LED matrices? If so, where can I buy some? And if so, what Arduino library would I then use?

I hate having to toss them, but I am not interested in spending the time wiring+soldering the parts together.

You can get them made very inexpensively. It is really straightforward and you could get them done for less than $1 each.

Look here for software library, designs and ready-to-go gerber files for the manufacturer: https://github.com/MajicDesigns/MD_Parola

That is fantastic!

I have all the parts for the PCB except the right-angle connectors. Are they generic ones I can buy on eBay?

Which PCB vendor do you recommend?

Check www.pololu.com for right angle male and female connectors.

Yes, or look at Tayda Electronics. You can get long strips and cut them down or they may also have shorter ones (5 pins) ready made.

The gerber files are for SeeedStudio but should be ok for most manufacturers. Depending where you are there may be local guys as well. I have no problems with Chinese manufacturers (except the long wait delivery times) but some people prefer local alternatives. Google is your friend.

Since I can't tell a Gerber file from a Eagle schematic file, which is which? https://github.com/MajicDesigns/MD_Parola/blob/master/hardware/Original%20Parola%20Module%20v1.1/Parola%20v1.1.brd or https://github.com/MajicDesigns/MD_Parola/blob/master/hardware/Original%20Parola%20Module%20v1.1/Parola%20v1.1.sch

No Gerber files anywhere.

I have no idea where they are. They are not in the ZIP file under MD_Parola-master/hardware directory

I give up.

They are there now. Somehow they were excluded when the github repo was set up.

Thank you.

The SeeedStudio PCB ordering page is at https://www.seeedstudio.com/fusion_pcb.html

Do I leave everything at default except for the board dimensions?

Pretty much - the defaults generally work. Some of the changes cost more, so those are up to you.

Dimensions you need to change to the board dimensions (51x31mm). Quantity will depend on how many you want.

PCBs ordered.

Let us know how you go!

Update February 23, 2017

I ordered 20 of the Parola printed circuit boards from SeeedStudio.

The Gerber files I uploaded the first time was corrupt. Not sure what happened.
It took them a week after they received the order to notify me of this.
But once they got the good Gerber files, everything went smoothly.

I assembled five of the PCBs and connected them together.

Everything works beautifully.

I am glad that I am able to put the LD-1088BS to good use.

Thanks, marco_c
