I think Hamlet philosophed about what is the better decision: doing suicide and put his life to an end ("not to be") or not ("to be") and avenge the death of his father.
Some religions are promising a better afterlife after lifetime of a person has ended, who has done well during his lifetime.
But some religions also condemn suicide.
So he balanced pros and cons and finally made the decision: It's unsure whether afterlife is existing or not and came to the decision that he wanted to live further on and decided against suicide and that it would be better ti die later than now.
