Hello,
So I'm currently working on this CNC machine project that works on UNO, CNC shield, A4988 stepper drivers and stepper motors. Everything seems to work as intended until I have the drivers plugged in, that is when the UNO seems to disappear from my device manager as if it isn't even plugged into my PC. I've tried powering it with a 12v power supply as I'm working but nothing really changed.

Your OS and version can be valuable information, please include it along with extra security you are using.

COMMON ISSUES
-
Ensure you have FULLY inserted the USB cables.
-
Check you have a COMMON GROUND where required. ( Thanks @Perry)
-
Where possible use USB 2.0 ports or a USB 2.0 POWERED HUB to rule out USB 3.0 issues.
-
Try other computers where possible.
-
Try other USB leads where possible.
-
You may not have the correct driver installed. CH340/341 or CP2102 or FT232 VCP Drivers - FTDI
-
There may be a problem with the board check or remove your wiring first.
-
Remove any items connected to pins 0 and 1.
COMPUTER RELATED
-
Close any other serial programs before opening the IDE.
-
Ensure you turn off any additional security / antivirus just to test.
-
There may be a problem with the PC try RESTARTING it.
-
You may be selecting the wrong COM port.
-
Avoid cloud/network based installations where possible OR ensure your Network/Cloud software is RUNNING.
-
Clear your browsers CACHE.
-
Close the IDE before using any other serial programs.
-
Preferably install IDE’s as ADMINISTRATOR or your OS equivalent
ARDUINO SPECIFIC BOARDS
-
CH340/341 based clones do not report useful information to the “get board info” button.
-
NANO (Old Types) some require you to use the OLD BOOTLOADER option.

NANO (ALL Types) See the specific sections lower in the forum.
-
NANO (NEW Types) Install your board CORE’s.
-
Unless using EXTERNAL PROGRAMMERS please leave the IDE selection at default “AVRISP mkII”.
-
Boards using a MICRO usb connector need a cable that is both DATA and CHARGE. Many are CHARGE ONLY.

Thanks to all those who helped and added to this list.
My guess is that you are plugging the A4988 backwards. Make sure that the pins labeled 1A, 1B ,2A, 2B line up with the header for connecting the stepper wires.
The potentiometer on the A4988 board will is opposite to where the pot is on the DRV8825 driver board.
If the shield AND the driver boards are correct check your stepper motor wiring
Not all chinese cables are wired correctly
The Arduino UNO disconnects as soon as I plug the drivers in. Motors were not connected yet.
Then you have a short on the shield somewhere and need to try the Arduino on its own WITHOUT the shield to ensure it is not damaged.
Once you are sure the Arduino is OK then check the shield very carefully for bad solder joints / bridges etc.
Also double check the orientation of the drivers as some have the potentiometer at the top and others at the bottom.
Hi,
Do you have a DMM?
If so measure the 5V pin on the UNO and see what happens when you connect the drivers.
What happens if you plug the drivers in one at a time?
Or have you soldered the drivers in?
Thanks.. Tom..
