Absolute Beginner: Sound/Light Dimmer project

I am trying to work out the feasibility of a project and would appreciate your patience and any help on the subject.

In short, what I want to do is to alter Fluorescent strip lighting so that it responds to noise level. The idea being that the lights will dim in direct correlation to the decibel level in the room.

In discussion with a friend he recommended that I have a look at Adruino as this could be the answer I was looking for.
I found some similar threads on the forum but none seem to be working with lighting that are powered off the mains supply.

I assume I'll need a number of pieces of kit in order to realise this idea, but as I said, I'm a total beginner when it comes to this type of stuff so I'd hugely appreciate any advice: in dumbed down terms so I can understand =(

Thanks

Dimming fluorescent lights is no easy task - do you have a ready-built dimmer that you need to interface to?

Hi AWOL,

No, I have nothing as yet. Do you mean I'd have to build some kind of custom dimmer? Or could I use a fairly standard dimmer that I've bought?
It's dawning on me that this may be a little too ambitious a project for me at this point. Not to mention ultimately pretty expensive.

Cheers

I don't really understand. Isn't the Adruino necessary so as to get to light to dim in correlation to the noise? If on a simple circuit how would this work?

Thanks

Currently I have nothing. I have an existing lighting set-up in a gallery that I want to alter.

A fluorescent dimming ballast will cost me how much? I've had a look but there are different types and I don't know what I'm looking for.

Thanks again

OK. thanks for your advice. unfortunately might have to go back to the drawing board on this one.

Cheers
