Absolute noob needs help

Hi guys,

I have just started a project where I am trying to develop an autonomous metal detecting vehicle.

I am using an ATmega328, L298 shield , 2*3v DC motors, E2E2 metal detecting sensor, proximity sensors for navigation (GP2Y0A02YK0F) and a yet to be determined power supply.

I need to come up with a schematic for this showing Pin locations for the mega and l298 and I really have no idea how the system should be connected... I am hoping some kind soul would be able to help me out / provide some direction.

Now.
How much programming experience do you have?
How much electronics hardware experience do you have?

If you have none or little, we would suggest you get used to programming simple examples that the IDE has in its menus to get used to the environment.
Is this a school project or just one you are playing with?

Especially, it might encourage those with some experience/knowledge of autonomous metal detecting vehicles to reply.

Is this a school project or just one you are playing with?

Assuming the 92 in his nym is the year of his birth, then I'd expect that this is a university/college project.
