accelerometer readings

can anyone tell me why i have a spike in acceleration in my readings from the accelerometer when all i am doing is letting the accelerometer just sit there, and im not talking about little spikes but like 3 volt swings when vdd is 3.3 volts meaning i would need to generate 3g's to achieve these swings in acceleration but its just simply sitting there? any help clearing this up this problem would be great, thanks

i dont have very much experience hardware wise, but i am a Electrial Engineer and this problem is stumping me, the reason being is that when i hook up a potienometer or a variable resistor there is no added noise to the incoming signal, i dont know if the model of accelerometer is sensitive or what? thanks

What is the model of accelerometer you are using? Unfortunately, they do tend to be very noisy devices.

Need a custom shield? Let us design and build one for you.

it is a MMA7341L 3-Axis Accelerometer +-3/11g
here is the link

and i am using the 3g setting thanks

Can you tell us more about these "spikes"? It looks like the module you have already has 3.3nF caps on the X/Y/Z outputs so a really short-duration spike would be very unlikely. You can try additional filtering yourself: put a 1k resistor in series with the output followed by another cap and see if the spikes go away. At least that will point the finger towards either the module (if they do go away) or your wiring (if they don't).
