Activating a button on an electric sewing machine

I'm doing a little research before starting a DIY embroidery machine project that uses an off the shelf sewing machine.

The build I'm looking at uses an older model and a pretty serious gear system to cycle a needle punch. I'd like to avoid that and source a cheap electric sewing machine model that has a single stitch function and just activate that button on the machine with the arduino.

Is it as simple as prying off the button's plastic cover and wiring the contacts to the arduino's contacts and opening and closing the circuit?

Doubtful. It may, however, be as simple as wiring the contacts of a relay across the machine's switch connections. Control the relay coil with the Arduino and a coil driver (transistor and flyback diode) or buy a relay module with the driver on the board. Without knowing more about the switch and the voltages and currents involved, that is the best that I can recommend.
