Adding a button press to void loop with other while conditions

Hi everyone,

I am working with some existing code from the SDfat examples that uses characters to trigger functions. I would like to be able to trigger one function specifically with a button press but have not been able to figure this out. Here is the original code that waits for a character entry before executing the function:

// Read any Serial data.
  do {
    delay(10);
  } while (Serial.available() && Serial.read() >= 0);
  Serial.println();
  Serial.println(F("type:"));
  Serial.println(F("b - open existing bin file"));
  Serial.println(F("c - convert file to csv"));
  Serial.println(F("d - dump data to Serial"));
  Serial.println(F("e - overrun error details"));
  Serial.println(F("l - list files"));
  // Serial.println(F("r - record data"));
  Serial.println(F("t - test without logging"));
  while(!Serial.available()) {
    yield();
  }
#if WDT_YIELD_TIME_MICROS
  Serial.println(F("LowLatencyLogger can not run with watchdog timer"));
  while (true) {}
#endif

  char c = tolower(Serial.read());

  // Discard extra Serial data.
  do {
    delay(10);
  } while (Serial.available() && Serial.read() >= 0);

  if (ERROR_LED_PIN >= 0) {
    digitalWrite(ERROR_LED_PIN, LOW);
  }
  if (c == 'b') {
    openBinFile();
  } else if (c == 'c') {
    binaryToCsv();
  } else if (c == 'd') {
    dumpData();
  } else if (c == 'e') {
    checkOverrun();
  } else if (c == 'l') {
    Serial.println(F("\nls:"));
    sd.ls(&Serial, LS_SIZE);
  } else if (c == 'r') {
    logData();
  } else if (c == 't') {
    testSensor();
  } else {
    Serial.println(F("Invalid entry"));
  }

here is my modified code:

void loop(void) {

buttonState = digitalRead(buttonPin);

 // Check if the button state has changed
   if (buttonState != lastButtonState) {
    // If the button was pressed (change from HIGH to LOW)
    if (buttonState == LOW) {
      toggleFlag = !toggleFlag; // Toggle the flag
    }
    delay(50);  // Debounce delay
  }

  lastButtonState = buttonState;

while (toggleFlag == HIGH && digitalRead(buttonPin) == 0) {
    // Wait until the button is pressed
    logData();

  }

  // Read any Serial data.
  do {
    delay(10);
  } while (Serial.available() && Serial.read() >= 0);
  Serial.println();
  Serial.println(F("type:"));
  Serial.println(F("b - open existing bin file"));
  Serial.println(F("c - convert file to csv"));
  Serial.println(F("d - dump data to Serial"));
  Serial.println(F("e - overrun error details"));
  Serial.println(F("l - list files"));
  // Serial.println(F("r - record data"));
  Serial.println(F("t - test without logging"));
  while(!Serial.available()) {
    yield();
  }
#if WDT_YIELD_TIME_MICROS
  Serial.println(F("LowLatencyLogger can not run with watchdog timer"));
  while (true) {}
#endif

  char c = tolower(Serial.read());

  // Discard extra Serial data.
  do {
    delay(10);
  } while (Serial.available() && Serial.read() >= 0);

  if (ERROR_LED_PIN >= 0) {
    digitalWrite(ERROR_LED_PIN, LOW);
  }
  if (c == 'b') {
    openBinFile();
  } else if (c == 'c') {
    binaryToCsv();
  } else if (c == 'd') {
    dumpData();
  } else if (c == 'e') {
    checkOverrun();
  } else if (c == 'l') {
    Serial.println(F("\nls:"));
    sd.ls(&Serial, LS_SIZE);
  } else if (c == 't') {
    testSensor();
  } else {
    Serial.println(F("Invalid entry"));
  }

}

Not sure how the void loop is not able to evaluate the button press. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply not sure how to post examples with multiple tabs. As I am using the sdfat library it's an example from the sdfat > examples v1 > lowlatencyloggerMPU6050. For the main tab here is the entire code, I have added my button on pin 2 and LED on pin 7. I can track the button presses and use toggleFlag to track between true and false:

/**
 * This program logs data to a binary file. Functions are included
 * to convert the binary file to a csv text file.
 *
 * Samples are logged at regular intervals. The maximum logging rate
 * depends on the quality of your SD card and the time required to
 * read sensor data. This example has been tested at 500 Hz with
 * good SD card on an Uno. 4000 HZ is possible on a Due.
 *
 * If your SD card has a long write latency, it may be necessary to use
 * slower sample rates. Using a Mega Arduino helps overcome latency
 * problems since 12 512 byte buffers will be used.
 *
 * Data is written to the file using a SD multiple block write command.

Thanks for your help.

The main thing to make code responsive all the time is to use only one loop.
And this loop is

void loop() itself

all looping is done by void loop
and all other things are done baised on loop() - looping

I assume that you wanted to keep the main-structure of the given code and add the button-press detecting. It can be done but it will be more complicated than learning
what I call most-outer-global-looping.

A for-loop or a while-loop does inside-local-looping. Which is the opposite of most-outer-global-looping

i use a customized version of pcRead() in almost all my code to debug and exercise functions for testing

may be helpful to see how serial input is handled
