Adding ESP 8266 esp-01 to Arduino Nano

Hello Arduino fans,

I really love my Arduinos and ESP8266. Can some provide some guidance on how to best marry them? I wish to use them in a MQTT context. Have the ESP8266 act has the master and Arduino Nano the slave?

How about a WeMos D1 mini or NodeMCU and no Nano.

I do have some nodemcu but they lack io. Perhaps it would be simpler to add io expander to nodemcu? I just want to stay within arduino ide and libraries if possible.
