Adding more components to Motorshield v2

I'm a complete novice at making things with motors, so I'm not able to figure it out. When you place the motorshield on an Arduino, it takes up all the pin-holes. How would I add other components, like an IR receiver? They need to occupy ports to work, so would I have to get another Uno board?

Some motor shields do have the pins available on top, others don't.

You can always use a screw-shield between the Arduino and motor shield.

Make sure you don't use the pins that the motor shield already uses.
