Adding 'unique' features

Hello, we are conducting a project for our capstone, and one of our topics is waste bin segregation with sensors. What features should we add for this project?

What features do you have already?

sensors for metal and plastic. we were thinking of adding the odor sensor or voice recognition but we also need back up features just in case it got rejected

How do you sense plastic?
What about paper/cardboard/wood?

Can you separate ferrous from non-ferrous metals?

Truth is that what you want is hard to impossible to do except by a trained human. Take college students for example, how many out of 10 would get it wrong?

You could try to segregate materials such as paper (optical or near-infrared sensor), plastic (near-infrared or capacitive sensor), glass (optical sensor or camera-based system), aluminum (inductive sensor), cardboard (weight or optical sensor), metal (magnetic sensor), wood (laser or optical sensor), textiles (vision system or infrared sensor), electronic waste (X-ray sensor or metal detectors), or organic waste (moisture or infrared sensor)....

This is not a simple project

maker test of both capacitive and inductive sensors

Note how close that particular capacitive sensor has to get to the object detected.

You can DIY longer range detectors for fingers at least.

Most likely, you’ll have three or more sorting stations back-to-back,
I doubt you’ll get the selectivity needed in a single pass.

First thing, list all the materials you want to sort
