That's a great point @kmin. Perhaps its all in my head but i feel that wireless communication will have more interference, or sources of interference to worry about. However, that being said i will look into it further. Wireless communication has come a long way over the years.
As for the sensors. Currently i am using simple sensors on a breadboard to test the circuitry and make sure I can transmit data across long distances. However, my end goal is a security system. I live in an area where bears and other wild life are no strangers to my back yard. The plan was to put pressure sensors in the ground. There are only a few areas where bears can enter the property. My plan is to bury the sensors in those areas and have them trigger an alarm that will notify us of big animals as well as hopefully scare them away. Hence the distance requirement. Also i do not know much about wireless transmission, so i dont know how well an antenna will do on the ground. It could easily be damaged. However is wireless communication is the best option im sure i can install an antenna higher up.
So far im really liking the RS485, but i will continue to research it. I have purchased the MAX485 module and will begin testing once i receive it.
If anyone has any further comments and/or suggestions by all means please share.
