Advice for object detection sensor?

Hi all, I'm trying to install a sensor underneath a basketball hoop that will trigger every time a basketball goes through.

I originally tried an IR sensor but it has two issues: first, it is too easily triggered by daylight conditions, and second, it doesn't have adequate range/distance detection (i.e. the basketball almost needs to hit the sensor to trigger it).

I've been looking into capacitive proximity sensors as an alternative but the distance detection seems to max out at 1.5" to 2", which is a bit shorter than I was hoping, and they seem to cost a lot. Am I making the right choice with this sensor or should I consider something different? Can anyone link to a quality sensor they would recommend?

Thanks much!!

Try a forum search, the same advice has been offered almost 100 times. Just not for a basketball hoop. But for optical beam interruption sensors.

An ultra sonic sensor detects things as far as meters.... Those with two large eyes..... looking like binoculars....

Thanks Railroader, I was considering those but read that they work poorly in conditions that vibrate a lot, which the basketball board certainly will.

Vibrations... Yes and no. Suppose the sensor is placed below the end of the net. I would give it a good chance to work.
