Advice on web camera project.

Most communications with the Arduino uses COM ports (serial data.) If you can write a program that opens a serial port and sends a string, then you should use that to talk to the Arduino.

If you want a more wireless or networkable system, perhaps a WiFi sheild or Ethernet shield on the Arduino. Then it can act as an internet server and you can send it commands over the network. Your program would need to open a network port and send the commands that way.

Sounds like a fun project. The software should be pretty easy. Getting a motor controller to actually drive the motor seems to be a difficult part for many people.

So are you going to have your guests holding up pieces of paper with the password? It may be a novel approach but I'm not sure it's a great idea.

A servo would be your best bet to position a magnet instead of just a motor. If your cam software on the pc can run a simple batch file, then the batch file could send the command to the arduino. sounds fairly simple. What testing have you done so far?
