A sudden and late summer trip to New York was just planned from here in Florida with my parents.
I would like to bring my latest creation, an intervalometer for my camera for taking time lapses. However I am concerned with the fact that it might look "suspicious" to the TSA.
I would prefer to take it with me on carry-on, with the rest of my camera gear. I already know that I should remove the 2 AA batteries from it and I suppose from the rest the carry-on as well.
Another reason I would like to take it with my carry-on as oppose to the check-in baggage is so I can explain, if that would be possible, what it is rather then have it removed permanently altogether after checked-baggage is checked in.

You may get searched. My checked in baggage was opened and inspected. I think it might be easier to check it in since they may consider some stuff suitable in checked in baggage but not for carry on. It might also be a good idea if you pack in baggage to pack it with its metal case opened to show them you're not hiding contents inside of it.
FYI, I carried a triple channel power supply, a rotation stage, motor, wires, tools, soldering iron, batteries, arduinos, project in aluminum project boxes etc. If they didn't search my baggage I'd be worried they're not doing their job, which puts me in danger.

That's an interesting comment since the recommendation is that you carry spare batteries in your carry-on luggage. Also, lithium batteries are prohibited from checked luggage.

I carried on something suspicious just last month. Instead of putting it in my computer case where I carried it to the airport, I put it right on top of everything and asked one of the folks there to please look it over. I had plenty of time if I needed to check it. The guy looked it over and handed it to the supervisor and he looked, handed it back to me and told me to run it through the xray. Everything went fine and I got there with it. On the way back, they made me check it in baggage and the little device traveled in my suitcase home.
So, your mileage may vary.
If you do check it, take it out and show it to the guys there; they'll tell you what to do next. It appears that just keeping our little inventions out of sight may cause more problems than we want.
Mine wasn't disguised as an Altoids tin though, it looked more like a prescription drug box.
