All my nano's refuse to talk

I started having problems a couple of days ago and decided to get a newer IDE. I had 1.8.2.
I posted a question about with version to download and got a response. That's where this post picks up. I decided that the problem I am having belongs in the hardware section.

I did the win 7 and newer. everything seemed to go fine, and I now have 1.8.19. But after a short honeymoon, none of my sketches would load, including example blink. I get this error :
avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

But I was having issues for the last couple of days, which is why i decided to get a newer IDE. None of my sketches will load now, nor example blink.
I have used 4 different Nano's (all were working fine until this started happening), 3 different cables, and 2 computers (the other still has IDE 1.8.2 on it). The same problem persists.
As I was writing this, for the sake of thoroughness, I tried loading the blink sketch to an UNO, and it loaded. what the hell ?
I tried my other sketches. Everything works. WTH ? It can't be a full memory problem, blink uses almost nothing. I just tried a fifth know good Nano, won't load. doesn't see it.
It's as if some rays have blistered all my Nano's.
Any thoughts ?

In the one yes and in the nano no?. Do you have the processor configured correctly and if it is with the old or the new bootloader?

Some questions

  1. Did you select the correct COM port?
2)Is your board correctly recognised by your operating system?
  2. Which operating system?
  3. Did you try the different options under tools -> processor?
  4. Have you tried different cables?
  5. Anything connected to pins 0 and 1?
  6. What was connected to the board(s) when it started failing?
  7. Have you tried just the board, nothing connected?

I don't know if i do or not. what do you mean by configured ? I carefully check the port and board each time. as for bootloader, that makes me wonder. I have the sinking feeling that i loaded a new version, but there was a problem with the bootloader, and i spread the problem from board to board. i don't know, but i have found in the past, if there is a problem, i probably caused it. what to do now ? Oh. I un-installed 1.8.19, and installed 2.0. same issue.

1 - yes, i am careful about the correct board and port.
2 - do you mean W10 ? i don't know how to respond.
2 - W10 home. IDE 1.8.19 & 2.0
3 - no. could you elaborate ?
4 - yes. 3 different cables.
5 - I ended up using a blank Nano. nothing plugged in, to elimnate outside
contamination.
6 - Nano's.
7 - yes. no luck.

The processor did it. Thanks to you both.

I'm guessing by that error that you mean upload and not load. Saying load would generally refer to the file opening. As for the App, other than what was already explained, it's more like a phone app for your computer in a way because it goes through a store that Microsoft controls, and they are generally safer to run than some random program downloaded from the internet. If you trust the source of a program always avoid the app versions.

When you say after a while, does that mean you were able to upload sketches to nanos at first? Or only an Uno?

@pratto, do not cross-post.

Threads sliced, diced, and cooked.

And I see you wasted @asyork's time by cross-posting.

Dear genius -
I will ignore you from now on. I explained why I re-located my post.
find someone else to lecture.
