almost fried

long story short i had a lcd connected to my arduino and when i turned the pot suddenly smoke started to come up, i couldent see from where, i unpluged evrything the fastest i could,
now, my pot is fried and the arduino seems fine (hadent checked the lcd yet)
but that seems a bit suspicious to me that the arduino is fine, dose the arduino got protection for that?
and is it safe to use now?
(arduino uno)

Since you don't know where the smoke came from, it's hard to say what to expect in this case. I would venture a guess that you'd connected the LCD incorrectly and adjusting the pot either caused large current flow, or is what you happened to be doing when you noticed smoke from something that had been heating up since you plugged it in - or - you shorted something out accidentally while adjusting the pot. I've trashed boards as a result of slipping with a multimeter probe...

im assuming the smoke came from the pot, and the pot got fried (with relly bad smell)
can the arduino servive that and still be safe to use later?
becus i tested all pins and it seems to be working.
but i dont know if its safe , and thats what bothers me
