AM Radio Signal in a so looooong wire

Good morning,

Is it possible to impulse a AM signal in a long wire (~500 meters) with arduino UNO ? I explain.
Around my house, I got a buried wire to guide my mower.
But sometimes it's broken and i'd like to input a AM radio signal in the wire to find where the wire is cut. I'd use a AM radio (the receiver) to follow the buried wire and when I couldn't hear the signal : it's here ! I have found it !!!

Sorry for my english...

Kind regards,
Tryptophane

That is not going to work very well. What yo need is a thing called time domain reflectrometery, this sends a signal along the wire and records the signal that is reflected off the impedance disconunity that is the break.

Not likely. Where would the Arduino get the "AM signal"?

The Arduino can generate a square wave on the wire at various frequencies, using PWM or the Tone() function. A suitable receiver (not an AM radio) could pick up the signal that the Arduino put on the wire.

Thanks for the quick answers !

The problem with reflectometry is that you have to measure the distance. If the break is at 300 meters, i have to measure 300 m to find the break and I don't know where the wire is exactly because it's buried.

If I have the suitable sensor, is it possible ? I think I've to amplify the signal. Which range of frequencies is it (PWM) ?

Is the whole wire a loop or is it open at the other end?

The problem with the AM signal is that your wire will radiate - which is the whole point, but I don't think the signal will drop off fast enough to determine the break.

It's a loop and an open one. The loop is for the extern part of the garden and the open one is a guide and it ends in the middle of the garden.

This product works with an AM signal and you keep the signal with an AM radio receiver :

If your system can track an open-ended wire, which is apparently possible as it's part of the system as designed, why can't it find a break using the same technology it uses to track the wire in the inner part of your garden?

Talk to a local electrical contractor/electrician. They have the equipment to find breaks in buried wires. They did this at my previous home when the wire to the well pump opened up. Break was near the well.
