Being after the newline, effectively it adds whitespace at the start of the next line. The optiboot example had spaces before the opcodes. I presume that if you have something before a space it is a label. Personally I like to see my lines in one place. In other words, if you want leading spaces you have them on that line, not as a trailing space on the previous line.
