Any possible way to segregate the Non-metallic items

Hi,
Is there any sensors can be used with arudino to segregate all the non-metalic items?
I want to segregate paper, plastic, etc....

Thanks,

What would you do with paper and plastic coated with metal? Or metal that has paper or plastic glued to it?

Paul

Assuming this is for home use, to detect things that you are not sure of.
Inductive sensors could help, as well as hall detectors combined with magnetic field generated by an oscillator/coil system (the metal detectors are using these approaches in general).
Also studies of ultrasonic response has been done, but the math goes heavy there.
You should check eddy currents theory, as well as metal detectors, how they can tell you the kind of metal.
I would imagine that having the simple metal detector built in the edge of your waste basket NOT intended for metals could be useful for example to support children to segregate. But then, separating plastic from carton, with all that random moisture, it's hard.

The idea of the consumer usable detector is interesting, especially how the big data paradigms could be used in the case. Various measurement technologies put together with mobile phone cameras, detecting product packages, bar codes, QR codes, and sending/receiving/combining all the information with cloud AI processing, agan this put together with your cash receipt and retailers product databases, is something we are gonna see in the future.

Hope your have a 7-digit budget at least.

This question keeps popping up. Must be a popular school assignment over there in kidswithoutaclueland

The last time I looked, the perfect sensor for separating paper and plastic was human eyes. That's what all the recycling centers were doing a few years back. Maybe they have newer technology since then. I suggest you call your local recycling company and ask. They probably have tours organized for schools.

No simple single solution - a large range of techniques could be used based on computer vision,
weighing, etc, but this is an advanced robotics problem really.
