Indeed that's what I was proposing. Not because the binary version was already available, but because RXTX is old and poorly maintained and buggy, while JSSC is so much better.
I mean: if I was you, I would have used JSSC. But it's just me giving unrequested suggestions, so just ignore them, ok? 
I can't wait to see your results: as I've said, I would like to see RXTX listed into the packages list
