I haven’t had that happen since my college days, when we had to test every diode from the lab supply for polarity(and functionality, since we students were rough on them). Just one more complication for the unwary.
If you’re using a component to the point where you’re wearing off the markings, and haven’t paid for a DMM yet, it’s time.
