The markings on glass diodes almost looks like it has been "fired" on and I doubt if it rubs off. The plastic diodes like the 1N400X that I have personally worked with are sometimes subject to solvent washing and would have to have very durable markings. I've never encountered any that were a problem and I wonder if those that lose their markings are just of low quality?
