A random thought: Put a short length of light colored shrink tube over the cathode end then shrink a longer piece of a darker color over the diode leaving part of the light colored shrink tube exposed. That won't rub off.
Mind you, this will add some thermal insulation so there might be an issue if drawing enough current to heat the diode.
