They take 2-3 wks to get here but other than they will burn the bootloader... I think. These appear to be the same, pricier one having a case.

You'll want one with a 6 pin connector or 10-to-6 adapter.
Personally I have this style. The pins were in the wrong order but it was easy enough to shuffle them around.
So there are something in the order of 3,974 people out there using these (presuming one each, probably not quite the case).
I think they are a pretty safe bet.
I haven't tried mine yet (I think I actually got it from Fasttech), but feel "Alice" is probably a pretty good source. Not necessarily the cheapest, but close.
You will need an adapter of course, very curious that these are almost always sold separately, possibly implying that Arduino is in fact, a very small part of the market for these programmers.

Those have 10-pin connectors. Arduinos use 6-pin...
Similar to the $1.50 programmer I bought some time ago. Mine claimed to support mega 2560, however it could not write past 128k without a firmware upgrade. The upgrade failed a few times so I ended up using Nick Gammon's ISP code on an UNO.
The 10 pin header is no prob. I just use 6 dupont wires to connect it.

So long as you don't need to change your setup very often...

That ones easy too, simply glue the six headers together. Then its just like a plug.
Especially since the wires are very cheap.

I was thinking more along the lines of "just get a 6 pin version" but there don't seem to be any at the $3 price point.

Actually - though I do have a couple of adapters - I bought some of the 3 by 2 "Dupont" housings to do the job properly. OK, so I do have about 95 more of them than I really need at this stage ...
