Arduino almost crashes

Hello, everyone!!!!

This is my first topic at Arduino Forum... so I'm having troubles with my Diecimila after I put an editted version of RTTL code (from Tone library) into it. Some of the differences are purely aesthetical, but this one I believe it's causing me troubles:

I've turned the char* into char* [ ]. My idea was to display the songs to the user and he or she choose one. So, after it, just in the loop( ) function:

void loop(void)
{
  play_rtttl(song[2]);
  Serial.println("Done.");
  while(1);
}

I've put a random song just to test my code. After it, with no other hardware connected to my Arduino, the debug LED, connected to pin 13, starts blinking and doesn't stop!
Worse than it: when I try to upload a new program to my Diecimila, my IDE send a "the programmer is not responding" message. To "fix" this, I repeatedly remove and connect my Arduino to the PC and try to upload any other program, and after some minutes, the Arduino go back to it's normal behavior, uploading a new code.

Does anybody now why this is happening?

The Diecimila only has 1kB of SRAM and those strings look like they're quite a bit longer than that. You will need to try putting them in PROGMEM. Even then you may run into trouble. If you have a lot of code there may not be room enough for it all in program memory.

Pete

I don't believe it's a memory issue. After compiling, Arduino IDE reply this:

Binary sketch size: 9654 bytes (of a 14336 byte maximum)

Caesar:

It is. The memory size reported by the IDE is of the FLASH memory that holds the program instructions. SRAM is what is used to hold all variables, arrays, constants, etc, as well as stack space, and is very limited in size, 2k for a 328p chip, 1k for a 168 chip. The IDE does not report on how much SRAM is being used.
There are methods to store string constant data in flash only and access it when needed and that is probably a method you should look into.

Ditto on what retrolefty said.

Given that your actual running code is only a few lines long, it looks like you would need well over 8K of (what would be) SRAM.

You need to put your strings into PROGMEM. using the "const" keyword won't help here.
