Arduino and motor shield power supply

Hi !

We are trying to control 2 DC motors and 1 stepper using an arduino mega 2560 rev3 and an adafruit motorshield (293D controller).

  • Stepper 1000 mA
  • 2 DC around 300-600 mA (or more if we can)

We just wanted to know what power supply we need to furnish enough current without burning everything.

Can we power the arduino + the shield + motors using only external arduino power supply or do we need a supply for the arduino and one for the shield + motors.

Imagine we use 1A for the stepper and 1.2A for both dc motors, can we use a 2250mA 9v supply plugged to arduino external power source to power all of this ?

The current rating of a power supply is what it can supply not what it will supply so don't worry about a supply with too high a current burning anything out.
Just add up all the current required and add bit more for margin and get one that will cope with that.

Ok that's good ! But what is the max current the arduino can support ?
