arduino as game controller? usb hid? tutorial? search terms?

I dont know what to search for
I want the computer to see the arduino as a game controller with 2 or 4 axis
from pots when I plug in the usb

the problem is that when I search for arduino usb or arduino hid, I get info about connecting those devices directly to arduino and not making arduino into one of these devices.
maby I just need a google lesson here?
I want to do this WITHOUT A SHIELD!!!!!!
