Arduino as USB/TTL Converter

Hello, I have a Arduino Mega 2560 which I want to use as a USB/TTL converter. The solution I have found in internet that if I connect the RESET pin of Arduino board to GND, the micrcontroller goes to an inactive state after which I can use the 0(RX) and 1(TX) pin directly connected to the FTDI chip as USB/TTL converter.
Is it safe to do so? Is there any chance that due to this sorting of reset and ground pin the board get damaged???

Yes, it's safe to do.
The processor can be held in reset as long as you want.

You know usb to serial adapters are a buck each shipped on eBay, right?

Actually I needed it right now to flash a device. The only resource i got is arduino.
