Arduino board coms

Previously working, with IDE version 1.8.0 or??.. Was compiling and uploading to uno genuino just fine and i had done some of the simpler projects..

I may have changed this OS from 8.1 to 10 since then..
I uninstalled the old and downloaded the new version 1.8.5..

So on using the old app..And with the new one.. it compiles ok but gives the following error message when uploading:

Arduino: 1.8.5 (Windows Store 1.8.10.0) (Windows 10), Board: "Arduino/Genuino Uno"

Sketch uses 928 bytes (2%) of program storage space. Maximum is 32256 bytes.
Global variables use 9 bytes (0%) of dynamic memory, leaving 2039 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 2048 bytes.
avrdude: ser_open(): can't open device "\.\COM1": The system cannot find the file specified.

Problem uploading to board. See http://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Troubleshooting#upload for suggestions.

This report would have more information with
"Show verbose output during compilation"
option enabled in File -> Preferences.

and doesn't upload..

Oh so here's the verbose message..

Arduino: 1.8.5 (Windows Store 1.8.10.0) (Windows 10), Board: "Arduino/Genuino Uno"

avrdude done. Thank you.

Problem uploading to board. See http://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Troubleshooting#upload for suggestions.

I've shut down, restarted, device manager to port properties advanced changed to com1. and every combination I could think of.. Any thoughts??

Thanks, Alan

Well ain't that the way.. Whatever I did differently,,?? it managed to start working..

Thanks anyway.. Sorry for the bother..

Alan

check COMX should be same in device as well as preferences.txt

That error indicates that the selected COM port doesn't exist - ie, the board isn't plugged in, you didn't select the right port from tools -> port, there is a hardware/driver problem preventing the board from being detected, etc.
