I was thinking about if I want to use a surface mount processor that I don't really have a way to hold while I program it.
I trick I was told was to use a footprint (board, SMT adapter, etc) and just hold the SMT part down and program it. It worked for me; it was, shall we say, less trouble than I expected.
This was the ATmega SMT part (TQFP-32?).
