Arduino cloud, arduino and chromebooks

I am a high school teacher struggling with the new ide cloud and my students’ chromebooks.

  1. the arduino uno r3 is not recognized and I keep getting port busy error (Chromebook)
  2. I switched to a usb c dongle and got some sporadic connections and an overheated dongle (Chromebook
  3. I tried the student code on my laptop (Macbook) with the ide installed and had very few problems
  4. I reached out to another teacher for help and the non-help I received is “oh, my new arduino with usb c cords work just fine. My old ones don’t work at all.”

Can anyone in the community help me with the arduinos I already have???

Which Arduino board exactly? Arduino Uno R4 WiFi, or older ones like the Arduino Uno R3?

I Unos and Uno R3

Does this mean the very same Uno R3 that made the USB C dongle overhead, was able to be plugged into your laptop (also a Chromebook) just fine, and uploading code to it worked?

yes

Unless something has changed, it doesn't work well with Chromebook. I have seen this come up a few times in this forum and have yet to see it solved.

Note that I am just a hobbyist and this may be incorrect.

Two workarounds in the meantime until someone chimes in with a better solution:

I don't have a solution but am suffering the same issues with not being able to connect our new Arduino (Uno R3) to a Chromebook. Here's the issue and my troubleshooting steps:

Issue: Arduino Uno (ATmega16U2) enters an immediate connect/disconnect loop via USB.

Hardware:

  • Device: Arduino Uno R3 (VID: 2341, PID: 0043)
  • Chromebook Processor: MediaTek

Troubleshooting Performed:

  • Clean Powerwash performed.
  • Android/ARC and Linux environments disabled/removed.
  • Tested with external 9V power supply to rule out USB power draw.
  • Works correctly on MacOS (rules out board failure).

Device Log Error: The chrome://device-log shows the device adding and removing within 1 second. Crucial error observed: USB Event: Permission broker failed to open the device: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.chromium.PermissionBroker was not provided by any .service files

If chromebooks are the 1:1 device for students, why doesn't Arduino fix the issue? The IDE extension worked so nice, but they just HAD to go cloud based for no real reason.

Hi @kbogoski. I'm sorry you've been having trouble using Arduino Cloud with ChromeOS machines.

Is this an official UNO R3 board, or is it a 3rd party derivative?

I ask because it is possible the problems you are encountering could be specific to the USB chip on the board. The official UNO R3 uses an Atmel ATmega16U2 microcontroller as its USB interface with the computer. Conversely, 3rd party derivative boards often use the less expensive WCH CH340 chip. To further complicate things, some of the cheap derivative boards use a mysterious chip that resembles and (sometimes) identifies as a WCH CH340, but has strange differences in behavior.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Are you referring to something you used successfully on a ChromeOS machine at some time in the past? If so, please provide more details about that, as I'm not familiar with this.

Or are you instead referring to the official Arduino IDE application? If so, did you use it successfully on the ChromeOS machine, or only on your Macbook?

maybe this'll help:
