I also find that IDE 1.x suits my needs much better than IDE 2.x for my Arduino library and sketch development.

I'm very afraid that it will eventually be "adapt or die". See below quote that seems to be pointing in that direction.

Hello @manolisg11!
IDE 1.x is no longer in active development and does not support all Nano board features. In particular, the bootloader update of the Nano ESP32 is known not to work.

From that perspective I'm so glad that I'm living in an AVR world.
